HYlight Cylinder: Metal/composite based barrier systems and tests for H² diffusion and steel embrittlement

The aim of the project is to develop a material-minimized high-pressure steel container for the storage and transport of hydrogen. Based on the currently usual pressure levels of 300 bar, a container with the same wall thickness and material usage for an operating pressure of 500 bar must be created. Compared to previous products on the market, the pressure bottle to be developed can increase the pressure (and thus increase the amount of stored hydrogen) by up to 60% or reduce wall thickness and minimize material by 30-50%. Using the modular approach of high-strength steel bottle and organic/inorganic coating combination, the container layer is not protected against hydrogen embrittlement by the increased wall thickness of the container, but rather a comparatively thin-walled container is to be equipped with a sufficiently hydrogen-impermeable barrier coating in the sub-project.
